The History of Trinity United Methodist Church
In the early 1870s, two local congregations—Sunshine Church and Williams Chapel—merged to establish what became Trinity. On May 12, 1873, a deed was granted for four acres of land to build a new meeting place midway between the two earlier sites.
Before the merger, each group met in modest log structures. Williams Chapel stood on the farm of William Hovie Chambers, west of the new location. Sunshine Church was located east of the site on Skitts Mountain Road (also known as Campground Road). Fires and other hardships made maintaining separate buildings difficult, and the decision was made to unite and build together.
The new structure provided a permanent gathering place for the surrounding community. Over time, the building became a landmark in the area, representing the efforts of local families to come together and create a shared institution that would serve future generations.
