Seeking History: The Old General Store
Having been many buildings over the years—but known best in the community as the Griffin Brothers Furniture Store— this historic structure has long stood at the heart of Clermont’s commercial life.
The Clermont Historical Society is eager to uncover more about the history of this landmark. Archival records show that around 1926, the property housed Griffin Brothers Furniture, which not only sold home furnishings but also manufactured caskets upstairs and operated a single gas pump beside the former Clermont Banking Company.
Though its story stretches across generations and changing uses, the building has always been a gathering place—where neighbors traded goods, shared news, and built connections that shaped the community.
If you have photographs, deeds, property records, or family memories related to this store—or to any of its earlier or later uses—the Clermont Historical Society invites you to share them. Every detail helps preserve and tell the story of Clermont’s small-town enterprise and community spirit.
