Sharing Georgia’s story through Clermont’s history

The Clermont Historical Society (CHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to collect, preserve, and share the rich history of Clermont, Georgia. By remembering our past — from the town’s early days in the late 1800s to the present — we strengthen our community and honor those who came before us.

Clermont itself has a proud heritage. Originally known as Dip, the town established a post office under that name in 1892. In 1905 it was renamed Clermont, and in 1913 the Georgia General Assembly officially incorporated it as the Town of Clermont. The municipal boundaries were defined as a one-mile radius from the intersection of King and Main streets.

Over time, Clermont has grown into a close-knit community nestled in northern Hall County at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Today, the town spans about 2.97 square miles—almost all of it land—and, according to the 2020 census, is home to approximately 1,021 residents.

What We Do:

Collections & Archives — We preserve photographs, documents, oral histories, maps, and artifacts that tell the story of Clermont: its founding, its people, schools, businesses, churches, daily life, and remarkable events.

Historic Preservation — We help maintain and highlight historically significant landmarks, including the Clermont Residential Historic District, which features late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture along Main, Harris, Martin, and Railroad Streets.

Education & Outreach — We host events, lectures, and exhibits. We aim to engage local schools, young adults, senior citizens, and any history lovers with our programs.

Community Engagement — Annual events, volunteer opportunities, and membership programs are all part of how we bring history alive and connect people.

Why It Matters

History isn’t just about the past. It helps us understand who we are and where we’re going. The story of Clermont - its pioneer settlers, growth, struggles, and achievements - is part of a larger regional story of Northeast Georgia. By preserving Clermont’s specific history, we preserve something unique. We believe that every photo, every artifact, every person’s story is part of the web that connects us.
